Born 1954, New York City
I have had a connection to old paper, books and documents for as long as I can remember. I come from a family of newspaper, magazine and book wholesalers and spent my childhood roaming the family warehouse discovering treasures. After obtaining two master’s degrees – one in library science and one in reading – I spent 15 years as a librarian and literacy consultant all the while continuing my explorations in drawing, text, and vintage papers. I spend much of my time scouring flea markets to find old documents, magazines, catalogs and snapshots and now have a large collection of each. The photos are often used in my work as references; the real images can be seen on my Flickr photo stream under my “nom de Flickr” Signs and Wonders.
My work is all about preserving memory, inviting the surface of the paper to accept new markings, and sending them out into the world again, reborn. Luckily, I’ve found these old pages to be willing partners on this adventure.
